Sprinkled over the Argosaronic Gulf and steeped in ancient mythology, these islands are small havens in close proximity to Athens. Daily ferry connection from the port of Piraeus makes them a lovely, easily accessible all-year-round destination for the Athenians. Visitors here will enjoy natural beauty, historical treasures, unique architecture, and glamorous, yet romantic atmosphere.
Just 90 minutes by hydrofoil from Piraeus (Athens), the close proximity of Hydra is ideal to enjoy a short break or weekend away from the capital to one of the most picturesque corners of Greece.
There are no cars on Hydra, transportation is by foot with a very efficient baggage service by donkey. You can visit Hydra by day cruise from Athens, but we recommend a three night (or longer) stay to really wind down.
Whilst there are no beaches, there are many private swimming spots – but Hydra is best known as a gathering place for artists and the galleries, cafes, tavernas, shops and restaurants are amongst the best in the Mediterranean.
The cute little island of Poros is just 200 metres of the coast of the Peloponnese peninsular. So close that on a warm evening you can smell the lemons from the lemon groves on the peninsular. Poros is ideal for a short island break close to Athens. The frequent ferry service takes a little under an hour.
Poros offers many and diverse accommodation choices, gorgeous beaches, picturesque villages and a unique cosmopolitan flair of another era.
Less than an hour from Athens, many of the island’s population travel in to the cities of Piraeus or Athens to work and conversely many Athenians have weekend properties on Aegina.
Aegina is a place of rich history. The Temple of Aphaia is arguably the jewel in the crown of the island, wander around Paleachora, visit the archeological site of Kolona. Aegina has a big variety of beaches, you can find them all around the island. There are sandy beaches with and without beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas, beaches with shallow water and beach sites where you can jump into deep water.
This is the island of the pistachio nuts. They are called in Greek: “Fistikia”. The harvest of the pistachios is celebrated every year in September with “The Aegina Fistiki Festival”. The Aegina Fistiki Fest is a a 4 days festival with lots of food, music, dance, theatre & art.
