Fez is the oldest of the imperial cities – the symbolic heart of Morocco. Its streets are laid out like a labyrinth and there is a feeling of grandeur in the air. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, dating back to the 2nd century AD, and the sacred Islamic town of Moulay Idriss.
Meknes is the next stop, a city that was founded at the end of the 17th century by Moulay Ismail. Visit Bab Mansour, Hari Souani (stables) and the old medina.
Fez itself was founded in 808 AD. It is still considered the premier religious city and holds its great Islamic traditions dear.
It is divided into two cities, the old and the new. Old Fez is one of the largest living medieval cities in the world, with magnificent gates and walls. Stroll inside the medina and souks, where craftsmen are still working items in the old age way, and soak up the atmosphere.
Fez is an absolute gem, and yes, it did lend its name to the hat!
