So much of our Western culture and language was launched by the Roman Empire, so much of the Roman Empire surrounds you as you explore. To help you appreciate Italy fully, we have several suggestions: Firstly ensure that you take enough time to appreciate what you are experiencing and enough time for you to be led down new paths of discovery; Do some reading before you depart – enough to give you a grasp of historical events. Then let Italy take over and your life will be forever changed.
The Art Cities
Italy is a dream destination for city stays: Rome, where antiquities bask in the sunshine in a colourful and lively metropolis, Florence, the art capital of the world, and unique Venice. Those in search of culture or vibrant modernity may prefer the charms of fashionable Milan or regal Turin, while the adventurous can explore the colourful chaos of historic Naples and the nearby ruins of Pompeii.
The Countryside
As well as the most popular destinations we specialise in the less well-known treasures of Italy. Walk the famous tracks of the Cinque Terre, experience the romance of the lake district and discover the lovely, little-known Lakes of Iseo or Orta. Enjoy your own villa in Tuscany or Umbria, or an apartment hanging off the hillside on the Amalfi Coast. Join the pilgrims visiting St. Francis’s town of Assisi or discover the Greek temples and cities in Sicily.
Eat Like the Locals
Italy is renowned for its food and rightly so. Italians love their cuisine and put a great deal of care and effort into crafting simple, delicious dishes. Take the time to leave the tourist areas and to go into the local neighbourhoods to find the simple family restaurants. Try a small local restaurants, the busier the better. When ordering concentrate on simple dishes made with local produce – attention to detail is what Italian food is all about; if you take a similar attitude to hunting down a restaurant you will be rewarded with the best food of your life.
