Sail Away
This certainly is the best way to explore Southern Turkey – the famous, leisurely, week-long cruise on a traditional gulet, sailing or motoring from bay to bay, on an itinerary that allows for flexibility and opportunities for overland tours.
The yachts, known in Turkey as ‘gulets’ (goo – letts) are traditionally built motor sailers of between 16 and 25 metres in length. They are very comfortable and have spacious decks for outdoor living and sunbathing.
They all meet Lloyds Security Requirements and are equipped with up to date navigational sailing, accommodation and cooking facilities.
The gulets that we charter have 4 or 6 cabins, aways with private facilities and are suited either to a party of friends or for individuals who book a cabin and sail with an international assortment of like minded travellers.
The crew (usually three, the Captain, a cook and a deckhand) are at the guests service 24 hours a day. It is up to you to decide whether to spend the day sunbathing and relaxing or using the opportunity to learn some of the art of sailing or even Turkish cooking.
Like everything else on the cruise, food arrangements are totally flexible, and within reason, the cook will do your bidding. The gulet will have a stereo system, telephone and video recharging facilities.
There is a bar on board that is operated on an “honesty” system, the bill being settled in USD, EURO or local currency at the end of the cruise.
“There are only two rules on my boat,” says the captain before we casting off. “The first one is that you don’t trample around my decks in high heels. The second one is that there are no other rules!”
Gulet cruises operate out of Marmaris and Bodrum and can be round trip Marmaris-Marmaris or Bodrum-Bodrum or one way Marmaris-Bodrum.
Departures are Saturday to Saturday. Half cruises are available (subject to space) for those with limited time.
Bareboating, crewed yacht charter, flotilla sailing and gulet charter – the opportunities for water based holidays on the Turkish Riviera are endless.
